Proactive Citizen: BWSSB acts on complaint, updates website
Ravi, a resident of Arekere in Bengaluru, whose water meter was stolen, experienced many difficulties trying to get it replaced by Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB).
He was made to run between different BWSSB offices at Arekere, Kothanur and Hulimavu. He reported he was asked to pay a bribe of Rs 1000, which he did reluctantly.
Sharing his experience on IPaidABribe in February, he wrote that the BWSSB officials were themselves confused regarding the procedure relating to replacement of a stolen meter. Ravi suggested that the BWSSB should publish the procedure on their web portal so that other citizens do not face hassles, like he did.
Dr Malati Das IAS (retd) (Former Chief Secretary of Karnataka) who is currently an Advisor at the Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy forwarded the complaint to the Chairman of BWSSB for redressal.
BWSSB has replied that a new water meter has been installed after following necessary procedures and receipt of new water meter cost from the consumer.
Monthly water bills are being issued regularly to Ravi, who has confirmed with Team IPAB that the assistance provided by the BWSSB is satisfactory. As recommended by him, BWSSB has now incorporated information regarding the procedure to be followed while getting a new water meter in place of a stolen one on the BWSSB website. As Ravi did not give the name of the person to whom a bribe was paid, this matter could not be addressed.
